Chief Executive
Senior Management
Ashburton, Canterbury
July 9, 2026
- Ashburton location
- Leading a strong team including volunteers
- Managing key stakeholder and funding relationships
Hospice Mid Canterbury (HMC) have a strong focus and commitment to ensuring those with life limiting illness together with their families and caregivers have the opportunity to continue living with dignity, comfort and choice. HMC operate on the moto of ‘Living every moment’.
Whilst support and care is non clinical, the broad range of support services scale from providing palliative care to offering a range of therapies, providing Arts and Crafts activities, organising social events, through to, where requested, helping document life stories. This works off the principal of caring for the ‘whole person’.
From their base at Kowhai House in Ashburton a majority of HMC’s support is provided in the home and covers a geography that runs from the Rakaia to the Rangitata rivers, engaging a large number of volunteers.
With no central government funding, HMC’s ability to continue bringing quality of life to those impacted relies on revenue derived from their retail shop and public donations.
Through careful stewardship guided by a diligent Board of Trustees, HMC has steadily grown its foundational capability from a community based initiative started in 2014 to having a dedicated base and home purchased in 2021. Any desire to continue their good work relies on having the right leadership on board to hold that balance between meeting demand, engaging the right skills and competencies and ensuring financial sustainability. Hence the time has come to appoint a full time Chief Executive who will work closely with the Trustees and stakeholders to HMC, lead a small team of fulltime staff and also support the 50-60 volunteers who willingly give of their time.
Your ability to span across managing the detail, becoming directly involved where required whilst still taking a strategic perspective will be key to sustainability and success.
Your background will need to evidence strength in leadership and communication and a strong eye for implementing and managing robust process and system. Underpinning this you will have the ability to understand and relate to what HMC is about, complemented by the ability to cultivate sustained positive relationships with stakeholders and a culture within HMC that will strengthen and grow the purpose.
Coming from within the sector or an environment that aligns will be advantageous but is not a pre-requisite. This role is about wanting to bring quality and value, consistently to those in need.
Applications will close 24 July 2026.
To be considered you must contact Echelon Group directly as applications through other agencies will not be considered or accepted.
