Our client is a forward-thinking and community-focused local authority dedicated to delivering vital services that enhance the wellbeing, safety, and sustainability of our region. The Assets & Services Department plays a key role in shaping the environment and resilience through emergency management, public transport, water services, waste management, roading, and rivers and drainage.


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Rivers Engineer to lead and support the delivery of our strategic river and flood management assets and capital works projects. This role is essential in ensuring the ongoing safety, functionality, and development of our rivers and drainage infrastructure across the region.

You’ll be joining a passionate team responsible for maintaining flood protection, stormwater systems, and drainage infrastructure, while contributing to flood hazard planning and community resilience.


Key Components Include:

Asset Management

  • Oversee the safe construction, operation, and maintenance of 30 pumping stations (rural drainage and stormwater).
  • Manage and maintain a significant network of flood-gated culverts.
  • Support the safe operation and ongoing development of the local quarry.
  • Assist in creating and improving centralised databases and asset management systems for river engineering and flood risk management.

Project Delivery

  • Implement the approved capital works programme.
  • Lead projects from approval through to completion, including consultant engagement, design, consenting, landowner liaison, procurement, and construction oversight.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure safety, quality, and adherence to environmental best practice.
  • Facilitate landowner consultation, including land purchases and easement agreements where required.
  • Prepare or manage the preparation of resource consent applications as needed.


About You

  • Bachelor of Engineering or related degree, accredited with Engineering New Zealand.
  • Be a Chartered Professional Engineer or working towards this.
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of relevant technical experience within rivers, drainage, civil engineering, hydraulics, hydrology and water resources engineering.
  • A background in Civil Construction or experience with Geotechnics is advantageous.
  • Experience with managing contracts.
  • A proven team player and comfortable dealing with different stakeholders.
  • You will have excellent communication skills. Written and verbal.
