Senior Civil Engineer Three Waters

Engineering and Construction
Queenstown, Otago
May 9, 2024

Live, work and play in Aotearoa New Zealand’s most spectacular setting.

As New Zealand’s fastest growing territorial authority no two days at Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) are the same. Employing over 600 people and growing, QLDC provides services, facilities, and programmes essential to the health and wellbeing of their continually expanding population and environment.

QLDC’s team take pride and are motivated by a shared purpose underpinned by care, connection, and community. Your role and contribution will sit at the heart of a dynamic and diverse set of communities where you will have a genuine opportunity to make a difference every day.

This opportunity is for a Senior Civil Engineer Three Waters, to join the busy, high performing Property and Infrastructure team. You will have access to hybrid working practices, a host of employee benefits (including highly discounted access to their health and fitness facilities), and a genuine commitment to supporting you and your teams ongoing training and career development.

The Opportunity

$2b of planned capital works across the next 10 years, will invariably bring landmark projects with technical and operational challenge but above all will drive the need to grow the skills and size of your engineering team. You will be at the centre of reviewing and facilitating the high-quality technical delivery of three waters capital infrastructure within the Property, Infrastructure, and Parks and Reserves departments. Your role as a senior is about support and guidance and sharing your knowledge with the internal and external teams delivering three waters infrastructure projects across the District. Ensuring quality, consistency, and continuity of technical project outcomes with a focus on continuous improvement is the goal.

Your oversight and guidance to Project teams will provide particular attention to design calculations, safety design reviews and adherence to relevant standards. This will see you engaging with industry suppliers and professionals ensuring the right level of professional and technical service and advice.

Your influence and participation begins at project scoping and planning to align with annual project outcomes. This will see you also sitting on QLDC’s internal governance group for technical gateway approvals.

Your Value

Whilst you will need to utilise your Project Management skills and training (eg PMP, PRINCE2) from an oversight perspective, it is your Senior Engineering skill base, qualifications, knowledge and experience that is foremost required to make the difference and deliver with excellence.

You will bring 8+ years relevant experience within three waters infrastructure project delivery underpinned by a Bachelor or possibly Diploma of Engineering.

Your experience in representing client-side in design reviews, will be a core part of your role and your working knowledge of the requirements of Taumata Arowai and the Water Services Act 2021 will be a pre-requisite.

Beyond this you will be expected to bring practical experience in three waters infrastructure design, risk identification and mitigation, infrastructure planning, sustainable design implementation and design management.

In order to be successful in the role, your strong and clear communication skills, including solid independent technical report writing will be a key tool in your toolbox.

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in key infrastructural work whilst living in one of the best playgrounds in the country.
